Details of the incident remain sketchy as at press time. Adesina Tiamiyu, General Manager of Lagos emergency agency, could not be immediately reached Tuesday morning. Protesters storm APC headquarters, want Saraki expelled from party

Some protesters on Tuesday morning stormed the headquarters of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, demanding the sack of Senate President Bukola Saraki from the party. The protesters, who said they were members of the APC in Kwara, also commended the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to dissolve the Kwara party executive. PREMIUM TIMES reported the Monday decision of the NWC to  dissolve the Kwara executive  which had pledged total loyalty to Mr Saraki. However, the executives   rejected the dissolution , saying the NWC acted illegally. Although Mr Saraki is still officially a member of the APC, he is expected to decamp to the opposition PDP soon. The other federal lawmakers from Kwara were among the over two scores federal lawmakers who defected from the APC last week. The protesters on Tuesday are however unwilling to wait for Mr Saraki’s defection; instead, they want him expelled from the party. Addressing journalists during their peaceful rally at the nat

After the Play, a Supreme Encore From Ruth Bader Ginsburg

For all his bellicosity, the Scalia in “The Originalist” is also a charmer, balancing his ursine ferocity with a thoughtful quietude. Justice Ginsburg, who is 85 and figures in the play only as an offstage presence (“I love Ruth Ginsburg,” Scalia says), painted the real Scalia as a considerate and mischievous colleague who, from the time they were appellate judges together in the 1980s, was not above whispering in her ear or passing her a note to crack her up. “Scalia was a very good writer, and he did labor over his opinions,” she said. “Both of us did. And sometimes he would come to my chambers, to tell me I had made a grammatical error.” The crowd roared. “I would sometimes tell him his opinion was so strident he would be more persuasive if he toned it down.” A pause, because she knows how to deliver a line. Then: “He never took that advice.” Their friendship was grounded in love of law, opera and, Justice Ginsburg said on Sunday, family. During his lifetime their rapport was the

A Toxic Tide Is Killing Florida Wildlife

Florida has an algae problem, and it’s big. This year, an overgrowth in the waters off the state’s southwestern coast is killing wildlife and making some beaches noxious. The toxic algal bloom, known as a red tide, is not unusual. They appear off the state’s coast almost every year. But this one, still going strong after roughly nine months, is the longest since 2006, when blooms that originated in 2004 finally abated after 17 months. The blooms can poison marine animals like sea turtles and manatees, while waves and ocean spray can carry toxins into the air and cause respiratory problems in people. They can also hit the local tourism industry hard. “We’re all being really devastated,” said Rachel Wells, 24, who manages an ecotourism business in Englewood, Fla. that runs catamaran tours in the Gulf of Mexico. “Business is just being hurt because we can’t conscientiously suggest for our guests to come out.” Her company has not done a tour in two weeks, she said, and has tempo

Buhari speaks on Benue APC plot to remove Ortom

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari has dissociated himself from any role in the plot by minority lawmakers in Benue State to remove Governor Samuel Ortom. According to a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, “President Buhari will never be part of any unconstitutional act, and any attempt to link him with the inglorious past, when minority number of lawmakers impeached governors, will not stick.” Mr Buhari and his party, APC, have been criticised for the role of security agencies in allowing eight Benue APC lawmakers sit Monday at the assembly complex to issue the removal impeachment notice on Mr Ortom who recently left the party. The APC lawmakers accuse Mr Ortom of corruption, a charge the governor denies. The majority members of the 30-member Benue State House of Assembly are of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party Mr Ortom joined last week. The action of the minority APC lawmakers and the role of the police and other security agencies in the crisis has been condemned b

Ortom: EFCC investigates Benue Governor over alleged N21.3bn fraud

Image
The governor has been under the EFCC's probe since 2016 over the mismanagement of the fund. Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has been the subject of a probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as he's been linked to an alleged fraud to the tune of N22 billion. According to a report by The Punch, the investigation into the governor's handling of the fund in question started in 2016, but wasn't made public until Monday, July 30, 2018, barely a week after Ortom dumped the ruling All Progressives' Congress (APC) for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) . According to the report, Ortom ordered the withdrawal of N21.3bn from four government accounts between June 30, 2015 and March 2018. Even though about N19 billion was earmarked to be paid to six security agencies that had been deployed to address the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state, the EFCC disclosed that only N3 billion was paid with the rest unaccounted for.

As Easy as Riding a Bike

But as those children grow up and learn to ride, they are mastering a very complex process. Mont Hubbard and Ron Hess, each now a professor emeritus of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California, Davis, worked on the project of modeling the system of bicycle and human rider from the point of view of mechanical engineering. “Everyone knows how to ride a bicycle, but nobody knows how we ride a bicycle,” Professor Hubbard said. “We think our way of imagining the human process is a way to understand that second half.” This is a system involving a human and a machine, and, he said, “the human is receiving sensory information and there is a control system in the brain creating the right corrective forces that need to be applied to the handlebar to get the bicycle to stand up.” But processing that information isn’t simple, by any means. Dr. Hess said it turned out to be more complicated than modeling pilots and airplanes. To make adjustments and keep the bike up
