Nigeria is a failed country

Image
The former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi has said that Nigeria under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is a failed country. Obi made this known in Abakaliki during the 2017 independence anniversary lecture which took place at the Akanu-Ibiam international conference centre. He expressed regret that Nigeria had no qualified leadership to revitalized the economy of the country, stressing that the country was still operating in the past. The former governor blamed the recent rise in agitation of youths, especially the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and others across the country as a result of the poor leadership of the present administration of the federal government. “For me, the country has failed, If anybody tells you that Nigeria is doing well, tell them it is a lie; they said that we are out of recession but almost all Nigerians are still feeling greatly the impact of recession”, he stated. Obi, who is a guest lecturer at the event, urged the governor

What Nigeria can learn from Psquare about restructuring

Image
Last week on this column, I had written about my experience in the beautiful island of The Seychelles and how Nigerian music, especially P-Square’s music, had conquered that island nation and enthralled her youth. Little did I know when writing that piece titled ‘How Nigeria Conquered The Seychelles’ that I would be devoting another column yet again to the Okoye brothers. But as they say, when it rains, it pours. The twin brothers are again in the news, not for their collaboration with each other, but because of their confrontation with each other. From what I gather, Peter wants the group to split up and go their separate ways, while Paul and their brother, Jude have a slightly different agenda. The disagreement culminated with a fight at the offices of the recently coronated Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo. The fight which was ostensibly recorded by Peter, showed the trio (including Jude, their brother/manager), using gutter language that belied their status as inter

School librarian rejects Trump’s book donations

A school librarian has declared that she would not like a selection of Dr Seuss classics here, there or anywhere, after refusing books donated by Melania Trump. Trump had sent a collection of 10 Seuss books, including The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, to schools across the country to mark National Read a Book Day. One school in each state, identified by the US department of education as having achieved high standards of excellence, received a package along with a letter signed by the first lady telling pupils that “the key to achieving your dreams begins with learning to read”. But Liz Phipps Soeiro, an award-winning school librarian at Cambridgeport elementary school in Massachusetts, turned down the offer, saying that her school has no need for the books. In a letter posted on the Horn Book site , she suggested that Trump should send the books to schools with fewer resources. “Why not go out of your way to gift books to underfunded and underprivileged communities that c

Politicians Have Offered Me Millions In The Past To Change My Message – Sound Sultan

Image
Sound Sultan is unarguably one of the few singers in the country that started out with social conscious songs and he has stuck to his message even about two decades down the line. However, he told Saturday Beats that his decision to stick to his message came with a heavy price . The Naija Ninja, as he is fondly referred to by fans, said that he could have been richer or more popular if he changed his tune but he did not . He further revealed that politicians have offered him millions of Naira to sing a new tune but he has always declined their offer. “ I sacrificed a lot in my career because I didn ’t want to contradict my message. Do you think I don’t want money from politicians ? They offered me millions but then , I cannot eat my own words. I have to stand for what I believe in. The most important thing to me is the people. I don’t regret refusing the money they offered me because it is not who I am. With due respect to those that collect money from politicians, I am a very co

No resting for lukaku- mournho

Image
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted Romelu Lukaku is unlikely to get a rest until Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns from injury. Lukaku has made a flying start to his Old Trafford career with 10 goals in his first nine games, including two against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. The Champions League clash in Russia was his 11th game of the season after also appearing in two World Cup qualifiers for Belgium last month. Lukaku hasn’t missed a minute in the Premier League or the Champions League. And Mourinho concedes the 24-year-old’s workload will not get lighter until Ibrahimovic returns, which the United boss has suggested may not be until the new year. “Without Zlatan we cannot rotate the striker, especially because Marcus Rashford is playing also in other positions,” Mourinho said ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit to Old Trafford on Saturday. “So until the moment we have Zlatan we cannot think about giving rest to our No. 9, the same way we give in other positions. We canno

Psquare breaking up is a game – Kenny ogungbe

Image
Even as Peter and Paul of the PSquare group stunned some of their fans with their latest feud about parting ways and fighting each other in a leaked video, not just a few also believe that all the stuff is just publicity stunt. Veteran broadcaster, Kenny Ogungbe, popularly known as Baba Keke is one of those who feel so. During his radio show on Kennis FM on Wednesday, the Kennis Music record label boss said he believes the fight between the P-Square brothers is a publicity stunt. “ I am sure they have a massive show coming up in December and they are using this as a publicity stunt. They have over 100 songs and people who called us on the radio within 15 minutes , requested for about 29 of their songs. “ If you are breaking up after recording about 100 songs, will you break up to record another big song as a solo artiste? The problem with Nigeria

Image
Leader of the Igbo Women Assembly and an associate of the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Mrs Maria Okwor, in this interview attributes the problem in Nigeria to failure of leadership and injustice which came with military domination and said only restructuring across regions, resource control and devolution of power will solve the problems. Excerpts: From the time of amalgamation to the present time, we’ve lived over a hundred years together, but now, things seem to be falling apart. What happened to us? Our problems started from our not having free, fair and credible elections. The constitution we operate today is not our constitution. What we had in the past worked better for us. I’m talking about regions and the time people like Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Awolowo held sway. Every region developed at its own pace and contributed to the centre. Now, the reverse is the case. They just gave you anything they liked from the centre. This presidential system that we operate today, I have a
